CLOSER TO NATURE

A rustic old homestead that's been in the same family for over a century

Located close to the hamlet of Greatham in West Sussex, this weathered old house has been the home of writers and artists for over a hundred years. Established before the First World War by writers Wilfrid and Alice Meynell, it has been a centre of creativity for family and guests, welcoming academics, hosting conferences, and maintaining a literary archive.

GET INSPIRED

The retreat

For the first time, Humphreys is becoming available for one-month stays, suitable for an individual or a couple seeking to establish their own creative direction. Four weeks of seclusion, close to nature, in a house full of literary associations, will provide an ideal opportunity for such development.

Humphreys, on Greatham Road, RH20 2ET, is 15 minutes from Pulborough station, with half-hourly trains from London Victoria.

Retreat details

  • Humphreys can be booked exclusively for either the month of March or of October each year.
  • The occupant will have use of the central section of the house (see photos): bedroom, study, kitchen (with oil-fired Aga), and bathroom. Other parts of the house will be unoccupied for the period.
  • Occupants will have use of gardens and orchard, tennis court, and extensive private woodland.
  • There are opportunities for walks to the nearby South Downs, the Elizabethan house at Parham, and the pretty village of Amberley. Further afield are the rewilded estate at Knepp, the Pulborough RSPB Sanctuary, and the historic towns of Arundel and Petworth.

The cost of one month’s stay is £1500 inclusive, payable in two instalments.
